Paul Longthorpe

Background:

Senior Engineer:

Paul joined Tarka Radio in the late 1980s. Whilst visiting a patient in the hospital he noticed a sign in the foyer and decided to offer his services as an engineer. At the time he was working as a broadcast engineer with BBC News at TV Centre in London, although based in Barnstaple with his wife Anne. Paul has lived in North Devon since 1985 but is originally a southerner from Torquay. One of his two children is now working as a hospital doctor in the NHS.

Paul has been a committee member and station engineer on and off ever since and in the 1990s was awarded honorary life membership in recognition of his efforts.

Paul has overseen many technical changes in his time including studio refurbishments and the move of the studios from level 2 to the foyer and then to the ground floor of the Ladywell unit. He also built the first Outside Broadcast Unit with a friend from BBC Radio Devon which was used for many years.

Paul still lives in Barnstaple where he has his own electrical business but also works for the BBC as a freelance engineer and project manager currently based at New Broadcasting House in London W1

During these difficult times, we do not have access to our studios as they are based in the hospital, however, many of our programmes are now being produced in our presenters home studios. We would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses carers and all other NHS key workers for all their hard work and support.

Also a huge thank you to the local businesses and organisations for their support in helping to keep Tarka Radio on air during these challenging times
